While Bruschetta may seem simple, its ingredients complement each other perfectly and create a mouth-watering dish.

Sometimes extra ingredients are added to Bruschetta such as cured meats or extra vegetables but I love my Bruschetta served with mozzarella cheese.

Bruschetta is a traditional Italian dish, which originated in the 15th century. However, back in ancient Rome, the Romans created a similar dish by smothering bread with pressed olive oil.

2. Beef Stroganoff, Russia

Next on our list of foods that start with B is Beef Stroganoff. Beef Stroganoff has been a popular, hearty dish in Russia since the mid 19th century. What is Beef Stroganoff? Beef Stroganoff boasts beautifully sautéed pieces of prime beef and a generous serving of pasta. Which is served in a thick, creamy, flavorful sauce. Beef Stroganoff’s distinctive sauce usually contains mushrooms, onions, garlic, and sour cream.

If you’re as hungry as a horse after a day spent exploring Moscow or St Petersburg, it’s well worth eating a whole bowl of Beef Stroganoff. In order to quickly restore your energy levels. If you’re looking to try something different, you can also order Beef Stroganoff, which is served on a bed of rice.

3. Bami Goreng, Indonesia

Bami Goreng is also known as Bakmi and is an Indonesian dish that features spicy, stir-fried noodles. What type of ingredients are found in Bami Goreng? A typical serving of Bami Goreng contains noodles, egg, chicken, soy sauce, chili peppers and a mixture of vegetables. Such as cabbage and spring onions.

However, Bami Goreng’s special ingredient is definitely sambal, which is a traditional Indonesian sauce that is comprised of chili peppers, shrimp paste, and garlic.

While it’s also popular in Malaysia and Singapore, you may be surprised to learn that Bami Goreng is incredibly popular in the Netherlands. The reason being, that Indonesia was once a former Dutch colony and there are still strong ties between the two countries.

Another reason why the Dutch love Bami Goreng is that the Dutch East India Company imported ingredients from Indonesia, such as soy sauce and chili peppers, when Indonesia was known as the East Indies and was a Dutch colony.

4. Burritos, Mexico


You may be shocked to learn that burritos have been consumed in Mexico since 10,000 B.C. Early Mesoamericans who lived in Mexico, would fill corn tortillas with avocado, chili peppers, mushrooms, squash, and tomatoes. Interestingly, early Native Americans also ate a similar staple of tortillas filled with meat and beans.

Today, burritos offer a wide variety of ingredients. Although the most popular types of burritos are definitely beef burritos, chicken burritos, and bean burritos. My favorite burritos also feature queso, which is a traditional cheese sauce as well as salsa, avocado, and sour cream. I also highly recommended squeezing a bit of lime juice onto your burrito, to give it a bit of extra flavor.

5. Braaibroodjies, South Africa

The next food which features on our list of foods that start with B is Braaibroodjies. However, Braaibroodjies isn’t as exotic as you may think. In fact, it’s a type of toasted sandwich which is commonly eaten in South Africa. While you may have prepared countless toasted sandwiches in your life but have you eaten a toasted sandwich is grilled over a charcoal fire or a wood flame?

In fact, Braaibroodjies gets the first part of its name from the Afrikaans word for barbecue or grill, “braai”. While “broodjies” translates to sandwiches in English.

A typical Braaibroodjies features cheese, onion, and tomato. However, in more recent years, chocolate-filled versions are becoming extremely popular. So if you see chocolate Braaibroodjies on a South African dessert menu, you’re in for a treat.

6. Baba Ganoush, Lebanon

Baba Ganoush is a Lebanese dip, which consists of mashed cooked eggplant, tahini, olive oil, and lemon juice. While its origins are in Lebanon, Baba Ganoush is also commonly served throughout the Middle East. Which makes sense as Baba Ganoush was first created in the Levant. An area of the Middle East that now consists of Lebanon, Israel, Syria, Jordan, and Palestine. 

Some items which I like to dip into Baba Ganoush include pita bread strips, carrot sticks, and celery. As Baba Ganoush is traditionally a snack, it’s often served as part of a platter. Which features other items such as olives and sliced up vegetables such as peppers and zucchini. I typically eat Baba Ganoush, with olives and pita bread triangles. 

7. Baeckeoffe, France

Baeckeoffe is a dish that was first created in the Alsace region of France. Which borders Germany. What is Baeckeoffe? It’s a delicious casserole dish that contains diced potatoes, onions, mutton, beef, and pork. Although Baaeckeoffe’s secret ingredients, which take it to the next level are white wine and juniper berries. Which gives Baeckeoffe its distinctive flavor. 

Baeckeoffe has an interesting history and was inspired by the Jewish dish called Hamin. Which was designed to be cooked a day earlier as followers of Judaism are not meant to cook on the Sabbath. As many individuals in Alsace were strict Lutherans, who also were restricted from cooking on the Sabbath, Alsace’s locals created Baeckeoffe, as a way of putting a French twist on Hamin.
